Cornelis Van der Schans, PhD, 85

Cornelis “Neil” Van der Schans passed away January 12, 2016. Neil was born October 7, 1930 in Gouda, Netherlands. He began his undergraduate studies in Utrecht, completing them at McGill University. He received his PhD in plant science from the University of Minnesota. Neil started his career with Eli Lilly in Indianapolis. After several years working overseas he returned to Indianapolis in 1976. Upon his retirement, Neil was involved with the International Science Fair, the neighborhood association Bragg, and his church. He loved and was loved to the end by his wife Johanna with whom he spent over 60 years in marriage. Neil is also survived by their three children, Marianne and her husband Michael Van Herk, Edwin Van der Schans and his wife Sally Vander Ploeg, and Raymond and his wife Kathy Van der Schans. His joy was complete with his grandchildren. Neil’s source of strength and hope came from his faith in the Lord. A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 5, 2016, 2:00pm at Common Ground Church (the former Hope Community Church) at 7440 Hague Rd, Indianapolis IN  46256.  An online guestbook is available at www.indianafuneralcare.com

So sorry for your loss. I worked for Dr. Van der Schans in Elanco Plant Science in the 1980s. Such a delightful, interesting person! He was always smiling and in a great mood.

Sad news. We send our love to Johanna & family. And will always hold Neil’s warm friendship dear… that wonderful, wonderful man with a smile as big as the universe.

I first met Neil at Eli Lilly’s Greenfield Labs in the 1970’s when we both worked there. Later, I had the pleasure of reuniting with him weekly at Mustard Seed Bible Study. He was so jovial and friendly, that it was always my pleasure to see him and talk about the “important” issues of the day. My prayer is that his family will experience the love and comfort of God’s grace as they mourn the loss of Neil, a wonderful man.
